President Obama and the First Lady will travel to Arizona on Wednesday to attend a memorial service for the victims of the Tucson shootings.

Six people were killed and 14 others were injured, including a congresswoman who was in a critical condition after being shot in the head by a lone gunman.
A US college dropout arrested after the shooting rampage on Saturday has appeared in court for the first time.
Jared Lee Loughner, 22, arrived at a federal court in Phoenix, Arizona, to face two counts of first degree murder, one count of attempted assassination and two other counts of attempted murder.
He was shackled, his head was shaved and there was a cut above his right temple. He answered questions briefly and said he understood court procedures. He did not enter a plea.
A judge ruled Loughner would be held in custody until his next court appearance on January 24. The charges, brought by the US government, relate to the shooting of government officials. The state of Arizona is likely to charge Loughner over the others who were injured and killed.
High-profile public defender Judy Clarke has been assigned to represent Loughner. She has previously helped defend a number of notorious clients including Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, ‘Unabomber’ Ted Kaczynski and 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui.
In all, 19 people were shot by Loughner at an event hosted by Democrat congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the town of Tucson on Saturday.
Among the dead were federal judge John Roll, 63; nine-year-old Christina Green, who had been born on the day of the 9/11 attacks and wanted a career in politics, Congresswoman Giffords’ aide Gabriel Zimmerman, 30; Dorwin Stoddard, 76; Dorothy Morris, 76; and Phyllis Scheck, 79.

Earlier, President Obama led a silent tribute at the White House for the victims.
He went on to say America was “still grieving and in shock”.
He said the victims’ families were still “absorbing the enormity of their losses”, while the wounded were “still fighting to recover”.
He added that Americans should focus on the “extraordinary courage” of the people at the scene of the shooting, which he said was “America at its best”.
